While fashion is all about trends, there’s one thing we’ve come to realize: 2021’s style evolution is youth-obsessed. From the edgy alt-girl trend to the rise of Y2K fashion and candy pink, the desire for pieces that turn back the clock is well-documented. The latest to join the vanguard? The micro mini skirt, a throwback ’60s silhouette that offers a higher-hemmed take on the classic mini skirt. What makes these micro minis different from ones we’ve worn in the past is the super-short hemlines, often paired with a low-rise waistline. (Yes, that does mean that low-rise-everything is back, too.)

If you’re nervous about this head-turning trend, don’t worry—it’s easier to nail than you’d think. Ahead, we break down everything you need to know about the micro mini skirt trend, including how to wear them and our favorite ones of the season.

When Did the Micro Mini Skirt Trend Start?

Like all of our favorite fashion trends, the micro mini skirt is immersed in history but it has pretty controversial origins. In the early ’60s, fashion designer Mary Quant raised the hem on the traditional skirt silhouette to invoke a sense of youthfulness and optimism. Her influence helped bring the miniskirt—and the sexual liberation it inspired—to the mainstream. Many criticized and dismissed Quant for shaking up traditional values and going against utilitarian fashion designs. Among the micro mini's disparagers was the one and only Coco Chanel—ironic, as the label’s tweed mini skirt is seen on the runway each season.

Thanks to Quant, the mini skirt remains one of fashion’s most everlasting icons and saw a resurgence in the ’90s. In 1995, Clueless outfitted its well-loved main character, Cher Horowitz, in a plaid miniskirt—and the trend didn’t stop there. The silhouette got a boost in the aughts thanks to stars like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Cristina Aguilera, who wore theirs with midriff-baring tops and strappy heeled sandals. Fast-forward to 2021, and models, artists, and influencers have started wearing outfits with that same Christina Aguilera-at-the-2002-VMA’s energy.

From the ’60s to the ’00s and now, the micro mini skirt has never gone out of style—it’s just evolved with the times. What’s shared: It was just as fashionable in the Mary Quant miniskirt-obsessed 1960s as it is today.

Why Micro Mini Skirts Are Making a Comeback

If you keep up with the runways, you may have noticed that designers are feeling nostalgic too. For their Spring/Summer 2021 presentations, labels like Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, Dion Lee, and LaQuan Smith showed takes on the micro mini skirt.

Not only has high-fashion taken interest, but the celebrity set has been getting creative with micro minis as well. Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa, and Kendall Jenner are just some of the it-girls on board, rocking them with heels, knee-high boots, crop tops, and long jackets. Net net: the micro mini skirt trend suits everyone, regardless of age or body type.

How to Wear the Micro Mini Skirt Trend

While the micro mini skirt may be a summer staple, it can also be rocked well into the fall. The best part about a fall mini skirt, like a fall sweater, is that the garment comes in a range of textures. Whether you prefer silk, cotton, tweed, or leather, each will offer a welcomed change of pace from the classic fall denims and sweater dresses.

For warmer fall days, we suggest pairing the micro mini skirt with a classic white t-shirt, a pair of designer loafers, and a ‘shacket.’ When the colder weather rolls around, don’t fretdesigner tights and lug-sole boots will keep you warm. We suggest throwing on Commando’s stretch-jersey bodysuit and a boyfriend blazer for a complete and polished uniform.

No matter weather is outside, we guarantee the micro mini skirt will brighten your day and have people asking, “where do I get one?”
