I've been drawn to Byredo fragrances for as long as I can remember—even well before I could afford to add the celeb-loved eau de parfums to my perfume arsenal. From their minimalist yet recognizable packaging to their unique and intriguing scent names, the luxury European perfumes ooze elegance and sophistication à la a bottle of fine wine.

Swedish native Ben Gorham unveiled the fragrance brand 15 years ago in 2006, with the mission of "translating memories and emotions into products and experiences." His first launch was Gypsy Water, a perfume that’s become an undisputed cult favorite for its fresh and free-spirited composition. Since then, he’s bottled up numerous one-of-a-kind fragrances, and even launched a cosmetics line in partnership with British beauty icon Isamaya Ffrench.

Gorham's perfume perfections have taken fragrance aficionados on an olfactory journey through time and space. Recently, he went as far as creating a perfume entitled Mixed Emotions to describe the tumultuous nature of our times. That’s, perhaps, the perfect example of the founder’s genius: being able to bottle up emotions, be it good, bad, or somewhere in between.

Byredo perfumes are the kind you want to indulge in, so, to help you pick your favorite, I’ve ranked and reviewed nine of its most unique unisex fragrances, starting with my absolute must-haves to scents you simply can’t go wrong with. Fresh, unique fragrances, right this way...

Byredo Gypsy Water

A cult-favorite amongst celebrities, editors, and the fragrance obsessed alike, Gypsy Water, put simply, is worth all of the hype. Its light and airy top notes of juniper berry and lemon combine with comforting base notes of vanilla and amber. This free-spirited scent earns the top spot on my list because while some fragrances are reserved for specific seasons, this one’s a year-round, hands-down favorite.

Byredo Mixed Emotions

I got this scent at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and its name resonated with me. After all, how do you bottle up the Mixed Emotions of tumultuous times? It took me a few wears to comprehend my feelings about this one (apropos the name), but In the end I fell in love with it. It opens with tart top notes of maté tea and black current and settles into an herby and slightly smoky fusion of tea, violet leaf, birch, and papyrus for a fresh, somewhat nostalgia scent that’s not overpowering and is certainly unique.

Byredo Mojave Ghost

I can’t get enough of this musky, mysterious scent for fall. The woody, aromatic, and ever so slightly spicy smell lends itself to a day spent reading and writing in a coffee shop. With base notes of cedar and Ambergris along with middle notes of violet and sandalwood, It’s definitely a skin scent that lingers like a ghost and reminds me of its refined, intimate presence every so often. If you have yet to visit the Mojave Desert like me, or indulge in learnings about the Mojave Ghost flower, this amber-floral perfume is seemingly the next best option.

Byredo Sundazed

Yes, cotton candy is an actual base note in this mood-boosting summery fragrance. But don't freak out: It's nothing like the overly sweet scents you (probably) spritzed on as a teen. Instead, think of it as the elevated, sophisticated, and straight-up luxe version of the feel-good fragrance of your youth. It opens with zesty citrus notes of mandarin orange and Californian lemon before mellowing out and subtly sweetening thanks to the jasmine, neroli, white musk, and of course, sugar-spun cotton candy.

Byredo Rose of No Man's Land

Soft and subtle, with notes of fresh rose petals and pink pepper, this perfume is born to evoke a calm, uplifting feeling. Per the brand, "Rose of No Man's Land" is the nickname given by soldiers to the nurses who saved thousands of lives during WWI, and this scent is a tribute to them. I like to think the brand did a great job bottling up a nurse's gentle and comforting qualities while nailing the true floral rose scent.

Byredo Blanche

As the name suggests, Blanche (meaning “white”) is reminiscent of a bedroom with freshly washed bed sheets and a fresh bouquet of flowers. Though wildly specific, it evokes  thoughts of early morning light pouring into a room, while someone stretches and takes in the new day. It’s soft, powdery, and feminine. All combined, I’d describe this smell as simplistic yet comforting, thanks to top notes of aldehyde and rose centifolia that melt into a faint musk.

Byredo Bal D'Afrique

As far as compositions go, Bal D'Afrique is one of the most unique and complex in my book. It’s beautifully exotic and unexpected, born from the idea of capturing Paris in the late 1920's.  Specifically, it’s meant to blend together the city's infatuation with African culture, art, music, and dance. In my dream world, I spritz this warm and romantic fragrance on before a Parisian date night by the Seine. But realistically, the aromatic notes of neroli, African marigold, and Moroccan cedarwood do the trick for day-to-day wear, making it a solid signature-worthy scent.

Byredo Flowerhead

Meet the crisp floral fragrance that epitomizes springtime—and is anything but subtle. A single spritz transports you to a garden that's in full bloom, but as a warning, a few sprays might be heavy for daytime wear. I recommend setting this one aside for special events like a wedding

Byredo Open Sky

I’m not usually drawn to cannabis notes in fragrances, but this perfume—wait for it—hits different. To be clear, it doesn’t smell like It's the streets of Amsterdam despite that cannabis (hemp leaves) is at the heart of it. Rather, it’s woody and spicy, with top notes of pomelo and black pepper and a base of velvetier and palo santo. It’s the newest addition to Byredo's eau de parfum lineup, and you should know that it's limited-edition, which means you ought to add it to your cart now if you have any intention of doing so.
